Change is coming
How are you going to own it?
Everyone keeps saying “I can’t wait for things to go back to normal”. But actually, I don’t think things will ever be normal again - and I’m cool with that.
I like change. I like mixing things up as long as it’s in the right direction and always improving. I’m looking forward to a brand new normal.
As you can imagine, we were massively pleased when the government announced we could start up again after 4 months of lockdown. It felt like forever. We’ve been running free Zoom classes meanwhile, which have been great and were really fun to get going. Finding different ways to structure a lesson, and different ways to cover the core aspects of what we do. Seeing everyone’s face and interacting was the best bit. Truth is, you can’t beat the buzz and the immense motivation you get from all being in the same sweaty room as each other and all sharing the moment, pushing on as individuals while knowing your part of a supportive team. It’s awesome, and we can’t wait to be back.
Change can feel uncomfortable but it’s an amazing way of pushing through to progress and improve, and to find the new you. Have a read of our simple 12 new rules (posted on Facebook).
One change is our new booking system. It’s really to stop too many people turning up unexpectedly - we’d get a hefty fine if that happens. So now you need to book on and pay your fiver upfront. It does mean you have to plan ahead, perhaps be less spontaneous. But on the flip side, it will encourage commitment and it’ll make you plan your fitness and ‘fun’ in advance which is a tried and tested way of "doing more things" and "getting more out of life”. Ask any life coach. It’ll also cut down on those valuable few minutes that we sometimes miss at the beginning of a session when we’re franticly catching up with money from latecomers. We can start on the dot in future. :) Also, if you really can’t make the session, you have until 5pm on the day of the session to transfer your booking to another date. After 5pm you lose your dosh, but this is because we don’t have time to fill your space. Soz.
The biggest change, and the thing that’ll be most frustrating until the pandemic fully passes, will be the lack of contact in lessons. We are, after all, a contact sport. Even though we don’t train full-contact like some blood thirsty animals, lol, we do love to get involved with fruity semi-contact sparring, and practical self-defence. We also love the feeling of smashing spot pads or whacking the kick shield, but for now, that’s just a little too close so we’ll be saving it until we get the all clear. New normal, day 2.
We’ll still throw all sorts of crazy fitness drills at you. We love inventing new methods to get the heart racing and to keep your motivation on fire, so you notice progress every week - and no two weeks are the same. That’ll never change.
Bring along your boxing gloves anyway. The extra weight during some of the drills and techniques will add realism and help tone your arm muscles. It’ll constantly reminding you that you’re a fighter, and it’s a fight-game. Keep that guard up even when your arms are tired - make it a habit - then when we do get to spar again, you’ll be moving like a pro from the get-go.
We recently ran a little survey to find out what people enjoyed in the classes and what they wanted more of. Most of it proved we were getting it right. Phew! But one thing that struck me was people wanted more stretching. So guess what? Yep, we’ll show you a wider variety of stretching techniques in future, and spend a little more time on it. You’ll start to find the stretches that most suit your body type. We also rarely get time to stretch at the end, because that’s valuable sparring time, right? Well, we’ll put that right - at least until sparring starts up again, lol.
So, let’s do it. Let’s get it back. Let’s get back that perfect technique, that fitness, all those friendships, and that all-round general awesomeness. But let’s also get something new out of it. Let’s find new ways to grow and progress, new motivations and new training methods, and of course new friends to play with! :)
It’s no secret that we love a group selfie at the end of sessions. It symbolises that we’ve all come together as a team, no judgement, no prejudices, just one big happy healthy team. It also promotes the fact that you made a choice to come and do something awesome, instead of sitting on your ass on the sofa eating pizza and drinking wine. Although hey, I’m all up for a bit of that when i get home, guilt free of course. Boom. :)
Virtual hugs and invisible high-fives all round. See you soon you lovely people!
Tim
